Unlock #1

National parks go free-for-life at 62

At 62, you can buy the America the Beautiful Senior Lifetime Pass for $80. one-time, good forever, at over 2,000 national parks and federal recreation sites. It admits your whole vehicle at per-car parks, and it cuts many camping and amenity fees by 50%.

Buy it at any park entrance with photo ID showing your age, or online at recreation.gov (small processing fee). A $20 annual version exists if you want to try before committing.

The $6,000 bonus deduction at 65

For tax years 2025 through 2028, everyone 65 or older gets an extra $6,000 federal deduction per person. $12,000 for a married couple where both qualify. It stacks on top of the standard deduction and works even if you don't itemize.

It phases out above $75,000 in income ($150,000 joint), so most retirees get the full amount. Just check the age-65 box on your Form 1040. no separate application.

Ross takes 10% off every Tuesday

At 55, Ross Dress for Less gives you 10% off your entire purchase every Tuesday through its Every Tuesday Club. No card, no app. just ask the cashier and show ID.

It applies storewide on top of Ross's already-marked-down prices, so time your runs for Tuesdays.

A Medicare Savings Program can pay your Part B premium

The 2026 Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 a month. but if your income is modest, your state will pay it for you through a Medicare Savings Program. That's about $2,435 a year back in your Social Security check.

The QMB version also wipes out Medicare deductibles and copays. Income limits are higher than most people assume, and some states don't count assets at all. apply through your state Medicaid office or call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to check in minutes.

Shingrix is free with any Part D plan

The two-dose Shingrix shingles vaccine. once $400+ out of pocket. now costs $0 for anyone with Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage. No deductible, no copay, no coinsurance.

Walk into any network pharmacy with your drug-plan card. The same rule makes every federally recommended adult vaccine free under Part D, including Tdap.

Georgia waives college tuition at 62

Georgia residents 62 and older can take undergraduate classes at University System of Georgia schools. including UGA and Georgia Tech. tuition-free and fee-free on a space-available basis. You pay only for books and lab supplies.

Apply through the school's admissions office with proof of age. More than 20 states have similar senior tuition waivers, often starting at 60 or 65. search your state's name plus "senior citizen tuition waiver."

The super catch-up: $11,250 extra at 60-63

If you turn 60, 61, 62, or 63 anytime in 2026, your 401(k) catch-up limit jumps to $11,250. well above the standard $8,000 for people 50-plus. That puts your total 2026 limit at $35,750.

It's a four-year window that ends the year you turn 64, so use it while you have it. Check that your plan has adopted the provision, then raise your deferral percentage with HR or your plan website.

Walgreens Seniors Day: 20% off at 55

One day each month. generally the first Tuesday. Walgreens takes 20% off eligible regular-price items for myWalgreens members 55 and older, and for AARP members of any age. Proof of age may be required.

You need a free myWalgreens account to get the discount. The date can shift around holidays, so confirm the month's Seniors Day in the myWalgreens app or ask your pharmacist before you make the trip.

Drug spending is capped at $2,100 this year

In 2026, no one with Medicare Part D pays more than $2,100 out of pocket for covered prescriptions. Hit that number and your plan pays 100% of covered drugs for the rest of the year. automatically, no forms.

If you take expensive medications, this changes the math: a drug plan with strong coverage of your specific prescriptions matters more than the lowest premium. Compare plans each fall at medicare.gov/plan-compare.

The Rule of 55 skips the 10% penalty

Leave your job. quit, retire, or laid off. in or after the year you turn 55, and you can withdraw from that employer's 401(k) or 403(b) with no 10% early-withdrawal penalty. That's a full 4½ years before the usual 59½ line.

It only applies to the plan at the job you just left, so don't roll that money into an IRA if you'll need it. the rule dies in the rollover. Regular income tax still applies.

Ohio's Golden Buckeye card is free at 60

Ohio residents 60 and older qualify for a free Golden Buckeye card, honored at thousands of participating Ohio businesses for discounts on meals, services, and prescriptions. Adults 18-59 with a qualifying disability are eligible too.

Don't count on it arriving by mail. the state no longer mails a card to everyone at 60. Apply or request a replacement at aging.ohio.gov/getgbc, or sign up at most Ohio libraries and senior centers. Other states run similar programs. search your state's name plus "senior discount card."

Denny's 55+ menu costs less every day

At 55, Denny's hands you a separate menu. right-sized portions of omelets, salmon, sandwiches, and more at lower prices than the regular menu, all day, every day at participating locations.

Just ask for the 55+ menu when you're seated. IHOP runs a similar 55+ menu, and many local diners do too. it never hurts to ask.

Extra Help slashes prescription costs

Medicare's Extra Help program is worth about $5,700 a year: it pays your Part D premium and deductible and caps 2026 copays at $12.65 per covered drug. In 2026, singles with income up to $23,475 (couples up to $31,725) and modest savings qualify.

Millions who qualify never apply. It takes about 15 minutes at ssa.gov/extrahelp or by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.

Social Security is now state-tax-free in West Virginia

Starting with the 2026 tax year, West Virginia exempts 100% of Social Security benefits from state income tax. for everyone, at any income. It's the final step of a three-year phase-out.

Only a handful of states still tax benefits at all, and most of those have generous exemptions. If you're weighing a move or just doing tax planning, search your state's name plus "Social Security state tax exemption". the rules have changed in several states in the last two years.

At 55, Michaels gives you 10% off your entire purchase. every day, including most sale items. It's one of the few retail age discounts with no special day attached.

Sign up for the free Michaels Rewards program and verify your age, then the discount applies at checkout in store or online.

Transit fares drop to half price at 65. nationwide

Federal law requires every transit system that takes federal funding. which is nearly all of them. to charge riders 65 and older no more than half fare during off-peak hours. That covers buses, subways, and light rail coast to coast.

Your Medicare card is legally valid proof, or get the agency's reduced-fare card for the fastest boarding. Many systems go further with steeper discounts or free rides, so check your local agency's senior fare page.

Colorado exempts 50% of your home's first $200,000

Colorado homeowners 65 and older who've owned and lived in their home for 10 years get 50% of the first $200,000 of home value exempted from property tax. the state pays the difference, often saving $500, $1,000+ a year.

Apply once with your county assessor and it renews automatically. Most states have some form of senior property-tax exemption, freeze, or deferral. search your county assessor's site plus "senior exemption."

T-Mobile's 55+ plan: two unlimited lines, $60

At 55, T-Mobile's Essentials Choice 55 plan gives you two unlimited talk/text/data lines for about $60 a month with AutoPay. roughly $30 a line, far below its standard-plan pricing. Only one account holder needs to be 55.

Verify your age online or in a store. If you're on another carrier, ask about their 55+ pricing before you renew. most major carriers quietly keep an age-based plan they won't advertise to existing customers.

A free wellness visit every year, not just year one

After your first year on Part B, Medicare covers an Annual Wellness Visit at $0. every 12 months, forever. You get a personalized prevention plan, cognitive check, medication review, and a schedule of the screenings you're due for.

Book it by name. say "Annual Wellness Visit". so it's coded as the free visit rather than a billable physical. Pair it with your free yearly flu shot and you've cleared two checkups in one trip.

Marriott's senior rate: up to 15% off at 62

At 62, Marriott's Senior Discount rate saves you up to 15% off the best available rate at participating hotels across its 30+ brands. Courtyard, Sheraton, Westin, Residence Inn, and more. The exact discount varies by hotel and date.

Select the "Senior Discount" rate (promotional code S9R) when booking on marriott.com or ask for it by phone; proof of age is required at check-in. Always compare it against the prepaid and member rates. the senior rate often wins on flexible bookings.

The extra standard deduction at 65

The year you turn 65, your standard deduction grows: for 2026, singles add $2,050 and married filers add $1,650 per qualifying spouse. It stacks with the regular standard deduction and the new $6,000 senior deduction.

A 65+ single filer can shelter over $24,000 of income before owing a dime of federal tax. There's no form. just check the age box on your 1040, and make sure your tax software did the math.

Free weekday state-park entry at 62 in New York

New York's Golden Park Program waives the vehicle entrance fee at state parks for residents 62 and older on any weekday (except holidays). No pass to buy. just show your NY driver's license or ID at the booth.

Most states discount or waive park fees by age. some at 62, some at 65, some free outright. Search your state's park system plus "senior pass" before your next day trip.

The HSA catch-up: an extra $1,000 at 55

Starting the year you turn 55, you can put an extra $1,000 a year into a Health Savings Account on top of the normal limit. HSA money is triple tax-free: deductible going in, growing untaxed, and tax-free out for medical costs.

One catch with a deadline: HSA contributions must stop once Medicare coverage begins, so the 55-65 window is your last, biggest chance to stockpile tax-free health money. If both spouses are 55+, each can make the catch-up in their own HSA.

At 60, Choice Hotels. Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Cambria, and more. takes up to 10% off with its senior rate when you book in advance. AARP members qualify for the same advance-purchase discount at any age.

Pick the "Senior Rate" when booking at choicehotels.com or mention it by phone, then show ID (or your AARP card) at check-in.

Texas exempts $200,000 from school taxes at 65

Texas homeowners 65 and older now get a total $200,000 homestead exemption from school property taxes. the $140,000 general exemption plus a $60,000 over-65 add-on approved by voters in 2025. On top of that, your school taxes are frozen at a ceiling the year you qualify.

File the over-65 exemption once with your county appraisal district. it's free and takes minutes. Never pay a company to "file" it for you.

LIHEAP pays heating bills. and 60+ gets priority

The federal LIHEAP program pays hundreds of dollars toward heating and cooling bills for income-qualified households, and applicants 60 and older get priority treatment in many states. earlier application windows, higher grants, or crisis assistance that can stop a shutoff within 48 hours.

Every year you wait past full retirement age adds 8%

Delay claiming Social Security past your full retirement age and your check grows 8% for every year you wait, up to age 70. For anyone with a full retirement age of 67, that's a guaranteed 24% raise. for life, plus inflation adjustments on the bigger base.

No private investment offers a guaranteed 8% annual bump. You can even claim at 70 while a spouse claims earlier. model your household's numbers free at ssa.gov/myaccount.

SilverSneakers: free gym access at 65

Most Medicare Advantage plans and many Medigap plans include SilverSneakers. free access to thousands of gyms nationwide, including many YMCAs, Planet Fitness, and LA Fitness locations, plus live online classes. Typical value: $300, $600 a year.

Check eligibility in two minutes at silversneakers.com with your zip code and plan info. If your plan doesn't include it, ask about Renew Active or Silver&Fit. most carriers offer one of the three.

The Medicare payment plan splits drug costs monthly

Anyone with Part D can opt into the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: instead of paying a big pharmacy bill at the counter, you pay $0 at pickup and the cost is spread over the rest of the year in monthly installments. no interest, no fees.

It pairs with the $2,100 yearly cap, turning a January spike into predictable payments. Call your drug plan or opt in through its website; pharmacies can't sign you up at the register.

IHOP's 55+ menu: smaller plates, smaller prices

At 55, IHOP offers a dedicated 55+ menu at participating locations. favorites like the Rise 'N Shine and senior-sized combos at lower prices than the standard menu, available all day.

It isn't always handed out. ask your server for the 55+ menu. Chains change these quietly, so the universal move stands: at any restaurant, ask "do you have an age discount?" before you pay.
