Stores usually call these “senior discounts,” but many start at 50 or 55, long before most people think to ask. Almost none are advertised; they’re applied only when you request them. Here’s who offers what, at what age, and how to claim it.

The one habit that beats any list
No list stays complete. Franchise owners, airlines, garden centers, theaters, and hardware stores all run quiet age discounts that never make it into a table. So make asking automatic: at every checkout and booking, ask “is there an age discount?” It costs nothing and the worst answer is no.

Straight answers
At what age do store and travel discounts actually start?
Earlier than most people think. Many begin at 50 (often through an AARP membership, which is open at 50), and a second wave (Ross, Walgreens, IHOP, T-Mobile) starts at 55. The government-tier benefits, like the $80 lifetime national-parks Senior Pass, begin at 62.
Do I have to ask, or are these applied automatically?
Almost always you have to ask. The large majority of retail, restaurant, hotel, and rental-car age discounts are unadvertised, vary by location, and are only applied when you request them at checkout or booking. The habit that pays: ask “is there an age discount?” every time. The worst case is a no.
Is an AARP membership worth it just for the discounts?
Often yes if you travel or eat out even occasionally. AARP membership is open at 50 and runs about $15/year, and it unlocks the best rates at many hotels, Avis, Denny’s (including pickup), and cruise lines. A few uses typically covers the fee.
Are these figures current?
They were verified as of the review date shown below. Discount programs change frequently and vary by location and franchise owner, so treat these as the shape of the benefit and confirm the current terms directly with the store or provider before you rely on one.
